In a town three years’ gallop before you reach civilisation the local councillors are trying to sweep a very large pile of dung under a tiny carpet. A Government Inspector is coming and the Mayor has to find any means he can to cover up all traces of corruption, bribery and creaming off the top.

The Government Inspector is a perfect piece of theatre. Both funny and tense it is a fast-paced comedy drama driven by the vivid imagination of a fantasist, and a whopping case of mistaken identity. Gogol is a master at bringing to life petty officials and social climbers, and making them squirm when they are poked by a very guilty conscience.
