In August 2011, The North Wall hosted a three week residency for fifteen talented young actors, designers and technicians, aged between 17 and 24, who won a place on the project after a series of national auditions.
The ensemble wwas led by all six members of the Awake Team, headed up by Christopher Sivertsen, artistic director and founder of Awake Project, who worked in collaboration with Lucy Maycock, the Artistic Director of The North Wall and dramaturge on the project. The participants in “The Company at The North Wall” were guided by each member of the Awake Team in their specialist areas of stage art (text, music, song, acrobatics and circus, dance and rhythms). With the director and dramaturge, the ensemble devised, rehearsed and publicly performed an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt at The North Wall on 20th and 21st August 2011.
The Awake Project was formed in 2007 by Christopher Sivertsen (principal performer for Song of the Goat Theatre Company, 2000-2007) and comprises five professional performers. Together they form a creative, artistically strong ensemble that produces and creates projects for the stage. They combine modern and classical texts, Polish physical theatre, acrobatics, circus, song, instruments and dance to create something extraordinary and unique. In addition to producing shows and performances, The Awake Project also offers workshops and creative artistic projects with young people from all over the world. These projects called Awake Youth aim to point focus to new generations and their incredible ability to work together in peace, and to empower them to develop themselves as good models for fellow youth.
The Awake Project has done similar projects with great success in Sweden, Poland and Scotland. Participants and audiences alike have relished their unique combination of talents, cultural diversity and professional experience. From 2011, Awake Project will commence a three-year core funded residency in the city of Västerås in Sweden, working extensively in the regional theatre and the Concert Hall, and touring Sweden.
The work with the young people at The North Wall will be developed into Awake’s future projects in Central London, Sweden, Poland, France and Norway.
